Sanat Nagar Flyover Construction Faces Major Setback

Srinagar, Feb 6: The construction of the much-anticipated Sanat Nagar flyover on National Highway 44 (NH44) has hit a major hurdle due to issues related to power infrastructure relocation.

Power Line Obstruction Delays Project

Officials have revealed that a 132 KV power line runs directly over the under-construction flyover, creating a safety hazard. To prevent potential accidents, authorities must either raise the height of the flyover or relocate the power line. However, with the project’s completion deadline of April 2025 approaching, concerns are mounting over possible delays.

A senior official from Kashmir Power Development Corporation Limited (KPDCL), speaking anonymously, stated:

  • “There is a proposal to raise the height of the power line, as shifting it is not feasible due to its proximity to the grid station.”
  • “We have submitted the proposal, but it depends on acquiring land, which remains unresolved.”
  • “If the height is not raised, there is a serious risk of mishaps.”

The proposal for land acquisition has already been submitted to the Deputy Commissioner, Srinagar, but officials question why this issue wasn’t addressed during the initial planning phase.

Deadline Set for April 15, 2025

Despite these challenges, the administration has set April 15, 2025, as the final deadline for opening the flyover to public traffic.

Background: NHAI’s Flyover Project for Srinagar

To improve traffic flow at key intersections like Bemina, Sanat Nagar, and Nowgam, the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) initiated a project in 2020 to construct three short-distance flyovers along NH44.

  • The Nowgam and Bemina flyovers were completed and opened last year.
  • The Sanat Nagar flyover has been delayed due to approval issues and infrastructure challenges.

Why the Sanat Nagar Flyover is Crucial

The Sanat Nagar intersection has long been a traffic bottleneck, causing major frustration for commuters. The completion of this flyover is expected to significantly reduce congestion along the Srinagar expressway bypass, easing travel for thousands of daily commuters.
