Srinagar, Feb 6: A truck driver from Sopore was shot and killed after allegedly failing to stop at a security checkpoint (Naka) in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district on Thursday.
Incident Details
According to police sources, the incident occurred when a truck carrying apple boxes was signaled to stop at a security forces’ checkpoint. However, the driver allegedly ignored the order and continued driving, prompting security forces to open fire.
The driver sustained critical injuries and later succumbed to them. Police have confirmed that a post-mortem is underway, and an investigation has been launched to verify his background and possible motives.
The deceased has been identified as Waseem Ahmad Mir (35), a resident of Goripora, Bomai in Sopore.
Army’s Statement
According to an official Army statement, the security forces had set up a Mobile Vehicle Check Post (MVCP) on February 5, 2025, based on specific intelligence regarding the movement of terrorists.
- A suspicious truck was spotted speeding toward the checkpoint.
- Despite multiple warnings, the vehicle did not stop and instead accelerated.
- Security forces chased the truck for over 23 km before firing at its tires to stop it at Sangrama Chowk.
- The driver was immediately evacuated to GMC Baramulla, where he was declared dead.
The truck has been seized and sent to the nearest police station for a thorough search, while investigations into the driver’s background are ongoing.
